Welcome to Highgate!

PUPS Archive Back Online

E-mail Print PDF

The PDP-11 Unix Preservation Society (PUPS) maintains an archive of many historically-significant and otherwise interesting UNIX distributions.  Highgate is one of about a dozen sites globally that mirror the contents of the master PUPS archive.

With the recent upgrades to highgate, the local archive has been offline for a couple of months.  I am pleased to report that it is now back online.  I need to get the process which synchronizes the local copy with the master site on a daily/weekly basis running again, but this should be completed shortly.

You can access the PUPS Archive at highgate.comm.sfu.ca/pups.  Have fun!

Highgate Now Supports SSL

E-mail Print PDF

Highgate now supports Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connections!  If you are logging into some of the services on the machine and are concerned about the fact that your login information is transmitted "in the clear" (and you should be!), then you can switch to SSL to encrypt your traffic to and from the web server.

Simply change your URL from a prefix of http: to the SSL equivalent, https:.  You will have to accept the new "self-signed" security certificate into your browser.  If there is great demand for these encrypted services then I will consider obtaining a certificate signed by a well-known CA (Certificate Authority).  For now, I am using the self-signed certificate approach.

Highgate Has a New UPS!

E-mail Print PDF

Highgate has a new UPS!  After a few power bumps lately at SFU, Kevin bought a nice APC UPS unit and installed it on Highgate.  The handy "apcupsd" daemon allows Highgate to safely weather any power bumps, and will shut the machine down gently if the power remains out for more than (currently) 13.4 minutes.  This should eliminate server crashes due to intermittent power outages and keep Highgate (and all the machine's users) happy!

UPS status is available on the Site Menu on the left hand side of the home page, or here.

Any comments are welcome, please contact Kevin at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
